Channel Orange
Album Cover Redesign
Frank Ocean's debut album, Channel Orange, received many accolades, resulting in his first Grammy win for his first studio project. Through Channel Orange, he brought a new introspective and idiosyncratic style to the music industry, igniting the popularity of alternative R&B music.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Channel Orange, I set out to redesign the album cover. While the original artwork is minimal and iconic, I felt it didn’t fully capture the depth and experimental nature of what is widely considered one of the best R&B albums of the past decade. My redesign aims to visually reflect the album’s textured, distorted, and scratchy background sounds, elements that make it so unique and critically acclaimed.

My redesign
As part of the project, I created a dynamic promotional video tailored for Instagram, a platform that allows the artist to connect directly with his audience. The video is designed to be visually striking and instantly engaging, with rapidly expanding and contracting rings that create a sense of motion leaping off the screen. The varying shades of orange instantly tie the visuals to the album, offering immediate recognition and context.
The motion graphics enhance the album redesign by reinforcing the concept visually. The movement of the stripes, which glitch and shift into place, echoes the sonic texture of the album and adds another layer of meaning to the overall visual narrative.
